Ian is a world-champion professional endurance athlete, a renowned distance running coach, an internationally experienced senior financial and economic analyst, and a sought-after keynote speaker.

As a champion endurance athlete, Ian has raced around the world in all styles of long-distance events, finishing over 200 ultras and marathons in every type of weather and on all terrains. Ian has won over 50 races of marathon distance or longer and has competed in many mountain ranges, including the Himalayas, Andes, Rockies and European Alps. In his role at FMG Leading, Ian shares lessons from his experience leading teams through extraordinary endurance challenges, connecting those experiences to the challenges executive leaders face while motivating and leading their organizations through times of tumultuous change. 

Ian earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge in England.

EXPERIENCE

Ian Sharman is a Senior Consultant at FMG Leading, a team of advisors and coaches who help clients achieve breakthrough performance through world-class human capital strategy. Ian is a passionate professional endurance athlete, a world-renowned distance running coach, an internationally experienced senior financial and economic analyst, and a sought-after keynote speaker. Prior to FMG Leading, Ian worked at Deloitte in both California and London, U.K., where he managed teams that worked on private and public sector projects focused on varied forms of economic and financial analysis. In his role at Deloitte, he collaborated with board and other management on time-critical projects and reports, conducted cost-benefit analyses, economic, financial and valuation modeling, and business planning strategies. In 2011, Ian decided to leave his lucrative career in corporate finance to pursue his true passion – endurance running – full time. He has become a world-champion endurance athlete, racing around the world in all styles of long-distance events, and finishing over 200 ultras and marathons in every type of weather and on all terrains. Ian has won over 50 races of marathon distance or longer and has competed in many mountain ranges, including the Himalayas, Andes, Rockies and European Alps. He holds the fastest time in a trail 100-mile race in the United States (12h, 44m), and the record for the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning (four of the original 100-milers in a 10 week period). Ian has won the USATF 100-mile trail championship twice, and is the 2013, 2015 and 2016 Leadville Trail 100 Champion. Ultra Running Magazine voted him as high as 2nd in its annual “Ultra Runner of the Year” rankings. Ian is an inspirational keynote speaker, sharing lessons from his experience leading teams through extraordinary endurance challenges, and connecting those experiences to the challenges executive leaders face while motivating and leading their organizations through times of tumultuous change.

ADDITIONAL PRACTICE AREAS

Ian is the owner of Sharman Ultra Endurance Coaching, where he, and the several renowned coaches that work with him, have trained hundreds of runners for virtually every type of endurance running event. He’s coached athletes to win several of ultra running’s major races, including the 100km World Championships, but mainly works with mid-pack and new ultra runners. He is also a popular running journalist, with a monthly column in Ultra Running Magazine, and has appeared on numerous running related podcasts and in magazines internationally.

ACADEMIC AFFILIATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Ian earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge in England. In addition to being an Associate Chartered Accountant (CPA equivalent), he became a Certified Personal Trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and is a Board Member of the International Skyrunning Federation, operating their US races. Ian is also a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Originally from Northampton, England, Ian currently resides in Bend, Oregon with his wife and their dogs.
